How does the commission process work?

Typically, a client reaches out with an idea for a room or space. They will either have a clear idea or concept in mind or if a client isn’t sure what they want, I recommend they browse through my paintings and share photos of pieces they like and why. We’ll also look at other elements they enjoy and pictures of the room where the artwork will hang, so I can create something tailored to both their taste and the space. Sometimes, a client may have a photograph they want to transform into artwork.. At this point it’s good to have an idea of scale or size of the desired piece you’re wanting. As soon as they’re comfortable with the process, direction and quote, I can get started.

My commissions have varied widely from people and pets through to landscapes and seashells. I’ll never take on a commission that I didn’t think I’d do a good job of and will always be honest if a client suggests something to which I think another artist might be better suited.

What is the commission price?

Pricing is entirely bespoke, just like the process and the end result. I always work with clients and give them different options to ensure things are time and budget friendly. I take 50% payment when starting at the remaining 50% on delivering the artwork.

How long does it take from initial chat to finished piece?

It totally depends on how long we go back and forth for, as some clients like to bounce ideas gradually over the course of a few months whereas others hit the ground running with a photograph and exact measurements. Once the concept is decided and 50% payment is made, I get painting and aim to deliver within 4 weeks. If you have a strict timeframe in mind (ie for a birthday or wedding gift) please vocalise this and I will aim to work towards this. As much information you have available from initial query the quicker I can get started.

Is framing part of the process?

I offer commissions framed or unframed. We offer both in-house framing or external framing services with a local framer. I always recommend having your commission framed as then you have ready to hang artwork as soon as its arrived. I can tailor to different tastes, colours, sizes and mount options which will be covered in initial conversations. Naturally, this means more framing and shipping costs. For more information on framing please take a look at our Size Guide and Framing FAQ here.
